South Korea

More than one-hundred-and-sixty leading figures in South Korea have signed a declaration urging foreigners to stop criticizing the cultural tradition of eating dog meat. The signatories -- who include the poet, Kim Young-il and actor, Moon Sung-keun -- described the dog meat critics as self-righteous, and showing a refusal to understand the culture of other people. Foreign animal rights activists have stepped up their criticism of the South Korean custom, ahead of the nation co-hosting next year's football World Cup finals with Japan.
